California State Employees Exposed in Recent Department of Fish and Wildlife Data Breach

While the memo released by the department did not specify all details of the breach, such as the motive or exact numbers, it has been confirmed that this data was leaked from a non-malicious insider threat.

A recent data breach exposed the sensitive information of state employees at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, according to a report in The Sacramento Bee. The department discovered this breach during the last week of December, however employees were notified via a memo late last week. While the memo released by the department did not specify all details of the breach, such as the motive or exact numbers, it has been confirmed that this data was leaked from a non-malicious insider threat.

An Incident Caused by Insider Threat

Although little is known about the exact numbers surrounding the breach, it is confirmed that the incident stems from a former state employee downloading sensitive information to a personal device beyond the state network. One of the only major details surrounding this exposed data is that it includes names and Social Security numbers of department employees from 2007, in addition to members of the conservation from 2007 to 2010. The data was also said to even include home addresses for some individuals involved in the breach. Because approximately 2,300 people worked for the department in 2007, employees are now being encouraged to monitor their account activity in the coming months to ensure that their information is not being used. While it is said that the data was downloaded without malicious intent, the incident continues to pose a threat to this data by making it even more vulnerable to being sold for identity theft. It still remains unclear whether or not criminal activity has accessed the data.
